The Look of Stone or Brick Without the Loose Pieces
Stamped concrete gives a patio, walk or driveway the look of slate, flagstone, cobblestone or brick while staying one continuous slab. In Wilmington, where so many homes are brick and so many older neighborhoods have brick and stone details, a brick or ashlar pattern can tie new concrete to the house. Unlike pavers, a stamped slab has no joints for weeds to grow through and no individual pieces to heave out of place after a hard winter.
How stamped concrete is made
The base, forms and reinforcement are the same as any slab. The difference comes once the concrete is placed. Color is mixed into the concrete, added to the surface, or both. A release agent is spread over the surface in a contrasting shade so the mats do not stick and so the low spots of the pattern pick up an accent color. Then the crew presses large rubber stamping mats into the concrete while it is still soft enough to take the texture but firm enough to hold it. Timing is everything, and on a hot July day that window can close fast.
After the slab cures, the release is washed off, joints are finished, and a sealer is applied. The sealer brings out the color and adds a layer of protection against water and salt.
Stamped concrete in a freeze-thaw climate
Stamped concrete holds up well in Delaware when it is built and kept up properly. Our stamped pours use the same air-entrained mix as every other outdoor slab. Sealing matters more on stamped work than on plain broom finish because the sealer is part of the look and part of the protection. Expect to reseal every few years. Stamped surfaces are smoother than broom finish, so for walks, steps and driveways we can add an anti-slip additive to the sealer or choose a pattern with more texture.
Popular patterns
- Ashlar slate: large rectangular stones in a random layout, the most common patio choice.
- Random stone or flagstone: irregular shapes for a natural look.
- Running bond or herringbone brick: matches the brick on many Wilmington homes and works well as a border.
- Cobblestone: a rounded, old-street texture for walks and driveway aprons.
- Wood plank: a deck-like look for a patio without the upkeep of wood.
Many homeowners choose a plain or broom-finish center with a stamped border. It costs less than a fully stamped slab and still dresses up the edge.

Caring for stamped concrete
Sweep it and wash it with a mild cleaner. Do not use rock salt; use sand, and after the first year only a de-icer labeled safe for concrete. Watch for the sealer looking dull or for water no longer beading up. That is the time to reseal, and resealing on time keeps the color from fading and the surface from scaling.

Stamped Concrete Questions
What does stamped work cost per square foot?
HomeGuide lists stamped patios from $9 up to $30 a square foot and stamped driveways from $8 up to $26, national figures. More colors, a complex pattern or a border raise it. Your design gets its own written number.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
It can be smoother than broom finish, especially when wet or icy. We use textured patterns on walks and steps and can add an anti-slip additive to the sealer.
Does stamped concrete crack in the winter?
All concrete can crack, and control joints are placed so cracks form in straight lines. An air-entrained mix, a good base and regular sealing keep stamped concrete in good shape through freeze-thaw winters.
How often does stamped concrete need sealing?
Every few years, depending on sun, traffic and salt. Reseal when water stops beading on the surface or the color starts to look dull.
Is stamped concrete better than pavers?
They are different. Stamped concrete is one slab with no joints for weeds and no pieces to shift. Pavers can be lifted and reset individually. We can talk through which fits your project.
